Simmons nets lone goal in 4-1 loss to Bobcats
- ROCKAWAY TWP. -- The Rockaway Township Energy U14 boys travel soccer team suffered its first loss of the season when the Wanaque Bobcats scored twice in each half for a 4-1 victory in a Morris County Youth Soccer Association game played at Norway Field here in the township on Sunday, April 10, 2011. The Energy outshot the Bobcats 7-3 in the first half yet trailed 2-0 at the break when Wanaque scored its first goal 20 minutes into the game and then scored again five minutes before intermission. The Bobcats (2-0) took a 3-0 lead on a goal off a corner kick 25 minutes into the second half before the Energy (0-1-1) countered with its only goal of the game. Jason O'Shea started the scoring play with a pass to Todd Wilson. Wilson brought up the ball and, when reached the penalty box area, he sent a cross to Tyler Simmons who was then able to finish for the Energy. Rockaway Township had two good first-half scoring chances when the Bobcats held their 1-0 lead. O'Shea headed a pass from Mauricio Arango just over the crossbar and Austin Morris sent a cross into O'Shea but the Wanaque goalie was able to smother O'Shea's shot on net. Justin Miller and Wilson split the goaltending duties for the Energy and each gave up two goals while finishing with a combined eight saves. Zach Berkowitz, Trevor VanBodegon, Andrew Stasiuk, Kevin Cassidy, Justin Miller, Wilson, O'Shear and Arango each put two shots on net for the Energy. Next up for the Energy is a 4:30 p.m. road game on Sunday, April 17, against the Highland Rovers. --- Arango, Bornemann goals led to 2-2 opening-day tie ROCKAWAY TWP. - Maurico Arango and Ryan Bornemann each scored first-half goals and the Rockaway Township Energy U14 boys travel soccer team held on for a 2-2 tie with the Caldwell Crush in a Morris County Youth Soccer Association season opener played at West Caldwell on Sunday, April 3. Caldwell opened the scoring with a penalty kick 10 minutes into the game and Arango tied it for the Energy when he scored on a free kick. Bornemann put the Engery ahead 2-1 when he scored with an assist by Michael Pais with five minutes to play in the first half. Both sides had chances in the second half, but the only goal came with five minutes to play when Caldwell scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 2-2. Rockaway Township outshot Caldwell, 25-10, and Energy goaltender Todd Wilson played the entire game and finished with five saves. Jason O'Shea had a solid game at midfield and saved a possible goal late in the first half when he chased down a Caldwell forward who had broken through the defense and was able to take away the ball away from him and clear it. Still later in the first half, O'Shea took a shot from just outside the 18-yard line that hit the cross bar. Next up for the Energy are the Wanaque Lakeland Bobcats on Sunday, April 10, in a 4:30 p.m. game at the lower field at Morris Knolls High School.

Energy captures title at Drew indoor tourney
ROCKAWAY TWP.. - Jill Wilson got a good look at her Rockaway Township U14 Energy boys travel soccer team recently ... and she liked what she saw. The Energy won three games and tied one in an indoor tournament held at Drew University in Madison on Saturday, March 19, to capture its age group championship. The Energy edged the Roxbury Galaxy, 2-1; beat the Denville Cobras, 3-1; stopped the Wharton Wolfpack, 3-0; and battled to a 5-5 tie against the Wallkill Knights. "We had 11 of our 17 roster players available for the tournament," said Wilson, the team's head coach. "It turned out to be a huge win for the players as everybody gave what was needed to take the tournament title. "The best part of the tournment was seeing so many of our players with the ability to score and, once the spring season gets started, I expect to see that list grow. "We had a lot of highlights ... a few slamming goals ... some great passing ... and our goalie Todd Wilson got some relief from Zach Berkowitz and was able to play the field for part of one game and he scored a goal, too." After the tournament had ended, Max Gregory and Mauricio Arnago led the Energy in scoring as each scored three goals in the four mini-game format. Arthur Pacheco scored two goals and Wilson, Andrew Stasiuk, Michael Pais, Austin Morris and Jayson O'Shea each scored one goal. Arango and Pais each finished the tourney with two assists while Berkowitz, Wilson and Pacheco each had one.
